How do you decide what kind of professional development (PD) you provide or receive?

Effective Approaches to Professional Development

by Tracey West

This month’s NPDCI web poll asks, “What type of professional development (PD) people most often experienced?” Early results show most respondents get their PD from one-time events: workshops, presentations and/or conferences. A much smaller percentage of respondents report participating in PD that tends to be more intensive and ongoing: e.g., consultation, coaching, and mentoring. Over half of the same persons participate in some type of Web-based training.

One key to effective PD is matching the type of professional development to the desired results. One-time events are a very common PD approach, and are useful for raising awareness and providing information. However, they are not effective for building skills. Intensive, ongoing, professional development that includes active learning and focuses on specific content over time is more effective for skill building. For more information on various approaches to professional development, we encourage you to review some of our recent site resources (see related below).

In MN, we are going to begin a pilot this fall through the Center for Inclusive Child Care (with funding from the MN Dept of Ed) that offers a 16 hour course called the Inclusion Series for child care providers, through the local CCRRs. The course is divided into 2 or 4 hours classes with a variety of assignments in between sections for participants to complete before the next class. Our hope is that providers will finish the entire course and receive certification in the course...it is progressive learning and each unit will build on the last. Our goal is to offer it in all regions of the state at least once a year. We'll see...

Cindy, thank you for sharing information about your study! This sounds like a great way to provide ongoing PD focused on an important topic - please come back and let us know how it is working.
