Mentoring

Posted by Mary Cordell at Jul 09, 2008
I am in the process of setting up a study with an early childhood educator. I plan to implement a training on and implementation of Creative Curriculum in a double session Head Start class room. I plan to train and then to work with the teacher and two aides throughout the year.
I had termed this training and "mentoring".
I do agree with the purpose and definitions of "mentoring" given in this page. Based on this information I do not think my part in the study fits the term "mentoring".
I have scanned the other terms and do see one that fits my role much better.

In my experience, I have utilized mentoring through modeling and working together as a team. I would take the lead and let the teacher learn through observation and assistance until he or she felt comfortable assuming the role of lead teacher. Mentoring takes a longer period of time than consultation or TA. It is an established relationship that is based upon mutual respect for the skills given and received.

Mary, I am curious about which term you found was the better fit (and glad that the definitions and exercise were a help with this aspect of the study).

Pam,
I just posted a description of my project on the TA board; earlier it fit my plan. I think I better fit with coaching. I am not peer to the staff in the project, so do not seem to fit the mentoring model.
