PURPOSE of Coaching

To enhance a person’s competencies in a specific skill area by providing a process of observation, reflection, and action

DEFINING FEATURES of Coaching

Scope
Typically, a one-on-one interaction between an external coach and a learner focused on achieving a specific, performance-based outcome

Framework
May be initiated as a one-time session (a coaching conversation or opportunity) or a series of sessions (a coaching relationship)

Strategies
Uses questioning and listening in combination with modeling, prompting, practice, and feedback to help a learner incorporate some new skill into practice 

EXAMPLES of Coaching from the EARLY CHILDHOOD FIELD

A literacy coach works as part of a federally funded Early Reading First project in public school pre-kindergarten classrooms. The coach visits pre-k classrooms once a week to observe, model, and guide teachers’ instructional practices to enhance literacy learning for all children.
